Christina Aguilera is urging Americans to vote – and she’s using her 5-month-old son, Max, to help spread the word.
Christina and Max will star in an upcoming Rock the Vote public service announcement, Christina, 27, announced on Wednesday night’s Larry King Live.
“It was really important for me to get involved and get excited about this election in particular,” said Christina, “being such one of change and new development for our country and for the future of my son.”
In the PSA, Christina holds Max and sings “America the Beautiful.” It’s a takeoff on a 1992 Rock the Vote commercial with Madonna wrapped in the American flag.
“But instead of wrapping myself,” explained Christina, “I would wrap my son, sort of pass it on to the next generation.”
The singer revealed that she restrained her powerful voice this time around. “Since I’m holding my son, I’m not going to, you know, belt in his face or anything like that,” she said. “But it was really, really nice to bring it down to a really intimate moment between me and my son.”
Christina didn’t mind putting Max in the spotlight since she says he’ll end up in the public eye anyway – and it’s for a good cause. “What a great way to sort of subject him in such a positive way [and] do something as positive as getting people to vote,” she said.
Ironically, Christina admitted that she didn’t cast her first ballot until 2004.
“As a woman, that’s embarrassing for me that it took me that long just because . . . we weren’t always given that right,” said Christina, adding that politics weren’t discussed in her house when she was a kid. “And I think it’s really taken for granted, especially with the younger generation now, you know?”
As for Barack Obama vs. John McCain, Christina declined to endorse either, saying, “It’s just exciting, all the way around.”

Both new moms each had their own cover of People magazine, and according to some early estimates, the issue featuring Nicole and Harlow is on target to sell more than 1.8 million copies, according to an industry source, whereas Christina and Max has far less. (People magazine could not confirm sales numbers; a spokesperson said its too soon to know how many copies were sold.)
Why does there seem to be more interest in Nicole and Harlow? One magazine insider said part of it could come down to the moms’ fan bases. “Christina historically doesn’t do that well on covers,” said the source, who cites poor sales of her wedding photo issue in OK!, and less-than-stellar sales of her nude photo shoot in the January 2008 Marie Claire.
That might be true, but Nicole Richie doesn’t seem like an obvious home run on the cover, either. “There’s also a greater element of curiosity with Nicole,” the source conceded. “She’s gone public about being a heroin addict. Her boyfriend is covered in tattoos. By default, she’s got the more interesting baby. People want to see how she settles down. They want to see what kind of baby someone with her background has.”
JLo’s People magazine cover with Max and Emme (for which she was reportedly paid around $6 million) is expected to far surpass either of them in terms of sales.
