Sources say it is Michelle’s love for their 2-year-old daughter that is providing the strength as she mourns Heath’s untimely death.

“Michelle was always really vulnerable, so this has shaken her quite a bit,” a friend of Michelle’s told Us Weekly in its latest issue, on newsstands now. “She’s mourning and trying to figure out what to do next.”

Matilda, though, “is too young” to know the heartbreaking reason why her father isn’t around anymore.

“Michelle and the family are showering Matilda with love right now to cushion it so she isn’t really aware,” a source close the family told Us Weekly.

The source adds: “Michelle basically told Matilda, ‘Daddy went away.’ Matilda still doesn’t grasp it.”

Heath Ledger’s death on January 22nd was due to an accidental mixture of prescription drugs, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for the City of New York has concluded.

“Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine,” said an announcement released Wednesday morning by office spokesperson Ellen Borakove.

“We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications,” the two-paragraph statement said in its entirety.

Heath, 28, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on January 22nd. Authorities said at the time that they did not suspect foul play but that medication was found near the body.

An initial autopsy was deemed inconclusive in determining the cause of death, it was announced on January 24th.

Heath had six prescription drugs, including anti-anxiety medications and sleeping pills, unnamed police sources told the Associated Press.

Michelle Williams and her two-year-old daughter arrived in Perth, Australia, Wednesday afternoon local time for Heath Ledger’s funeral.

Michelle, wearing a black dress and black sunglasses, held the striped-dress-clad Matilda in her arms as they exited the plane under heavy security. Matilda clung to a stuffed rabbit as more than five police officers and airport security escorted them into an elevator.

From the airport, Michelle and Matilda (who was covered with a blanket) headed to Heath’s mom’s house in the suburb of Applecross. Soon afterward, guests began dropping by to pay their respects.

A private funeral for the actor – who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on January 22nd – is expected to take place on Saturday.

Although Michelle and Heath (who met while filming Brokeback Mountain) split last September, the two remained bonded by love for their daughter. In a statement released after his death, the actress said, “My heart is broken.”

Michelle Williams has broken her silence following the death of Heath Ledger, saying in a statement, “My heart is broken.”

“Please respect our need to grieve privately,” Michelle said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. “My heart is broken.”

She adds: “I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day.

“His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up in the best memories of him.”

This is just so sad…I didn’t believe it when I heard it on the news last night…I had to rewind because I thought I misheard. Heath was only 28 and he had a adorable baby daughter, and a very promising career…he had a big movie coming out this summer titled, “The Dark Knight.” Heath and (then wife) Michelle were one of the very first couples I dedicated a category to. My thoughts and prayers go out to Heath’s family. :(

Michelle Williams was on location in Sweden, believed to be with 2-year-old daughter Matilda, when she got the terrible news.

Although their three-year relationship didn’t last, Michelle and Heath could always agree that their daughter comes first.

“He was absolutely in love with his daughter,” says another source. “And he really liked what he did [acting]. He spoiled Matilda rotten. He was playful and very funny with her.”

The source adds: “I can’t believe Matilda is going to grow up without a dad, without knowing her father. And that Michelle will have to deal with having a daughter who’s lost her father. She’s a survivor. She’ll make it, but it’s going to be hard. Her first concern is going to be Matilda.”
