Viewing Reese Witherspoon’s new movie ’Monsters vs. Aliens’ had the unusual effect on her son Deacon, 5, of making him want to kill things!

Reese was stunned when a trip to see ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ – in which she voices the character of Susan, a woman who swells to 42ft 11ins tall and then helps save the planet from an alien invasion – brought out Deacon’s violent tendencies.

Reese said: “I took my kids to see it a couple of week’s ago. As I was driving home from the theatre I said to my children in the back seat, ‘So, what do you think is the message in this movie?’ My daughter really thoughtfully said, ‘I think it’s about never letting someone underestimate you and always living up to your true potential.’ I said, ‘That is so astute, yes, Ava, that is exactly what the message is.’

“Then I said, ‘Deacon, what do you think the movie is about? Friendship? Being an outsider?’ He said, ‘I think it’s about… I think it’s about when octopus aliens come to your planet you got to make sure you kill them.’ “

Despite the effect the movie had on her son, 5ft 1ins Reese has no regrets about starring in it because it allowed her to realise one long-held ambition – to be tall.

She explained: “I appreciated it being somewhat regular sized – actually, I’m a little short. I think it would be such a dream to be able to be walk into any store and to be able to buy jeans that fit, to buy tall jeans that would be nice.”

As the holidays approach, Reese faces a dilemma shared by many divorced parents – how to share custody of her young children during the holiday. 

“I think the most important thing is to be a grownup,” she said, “and not let any kind of feelings affect how you deal with your children.” 

For the mother-of-two – who finalized her divorce from Ryan Phillippe in June – that means having “a lot of communication” with her ex-husband and “just being very open.”

“I’m very lucky in that we raise our kids to just be happy,” Reese, 32, said Sunday in Beverly Hills while promoting her film Four Christmases. “I think the most important thing is the children. What do they want, what makes them feel comfortable?” 

In the film, Reese plays the daughter of divorced parents who, at first, lacks any parenting skills. Could Reese relate? 

“When I first held my baby, Ava, [that] was the first time I’d ever held a baby in my life,” she said. “So I understand that sort of fear or not being a good mom. It took me a long time to feel really comfortable in the role of being a mother.” (In addition to Ava, now 9, Reese and Ryan also have a son, Deacon, 5.) 

As for marriage, “I [had] a certain idea what I thought marriage gives,” said Reese – who’s now dating Jake Gyllenhaal, 27. But “sometimes it doesn’t work out that way so you have to be open to whatever comes your way in life. … Love and relationships take all kinds of shapes and it’s not necessarily the ones you recognize.” 

So, would she ever get married again? “I don’t know,” she said, laughing. “I don’t think about it much.”

Ryan Phillippe was snapped taking his son Deacon to a karate lesson for his fifth birthday. Ryan watched from a sofa in the window of the small martial arts school before leaving alone. Deacon left with a nanny who took him back to his mother, Reese Witherspoon.

Avon global ambassador Reese Witherspoon was snapped celebrating the company’s first global fund-raising product, the Women’s Empowerment Bracelet, during an event in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Thursday.

The mother-of-two told reporters in Sao Paulo on Thursday, “There isn’t a woman in the world that doesn’t have a friend or a partner who’s actually experiencing some sort of violence against them, so I think although domestic violence hasn’t happened to me personally, I certainly know women who are dealing with this struggle every day.”

“Domestic violence affects women who are famous, who are not famous, women who have money, women who have no money. This is an issue that crosses all boundaries and it certainly affects everyone.”

Reese Witherspoon, Avon Global Ambassador and Honorary Chair of the Avon Foundation, joined walkers at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.

Reese, 32, shared the following at the event:

On her kids Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4: “They have always kind of known me to be who I was, and if people know Mom at the grocery store, I think they kind of like it. Obviously, if you’re not having the greatest day, it’s not always easy, but for the most part, fame brings a lot of positive things into our life.”

On her role as an Avon ambassador: “I’ve always been very focused on creating positive images and doing things to give back to women.”

On her daughter Ava: “She has a very giving spirit, so it’s great to encourage that. There’s a great responsibility to educate your children and show them what’s important in life, which includes giving back.”

Reese Witherspoon visited at a New Orleans school for at-risk kids for the upcoming Idol Gives Back special.

Airing April 9th, the show features Reese, 32, at a Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School where troubled children learn to become community leaders.

Back in 2006, Reese (a CDF board member) helped open the city’s first Freedom School.

“Once you have children in your life, you can no longer close your eyes to people… who are in a similar situation,” Reese told ABC News at the time.

Brad Pitt, Miley Cyrus, Robin Williams and Mariah Carey will also take part in the Idol Gives Back show.

Last year’s special raised more than $75 million to help fight poverty.
